Muay Thai gym etiquette in Thailand: the wai, trainers, and what to wear
Updated October 19, 2026
The short answer
Show respect and you will be welcome. Greet your trainer with a wai (palms together, a small bow). Arrive on time, listen, and follow instructions. Take off your shoes before you step into the ring. Wear Muay Thai shorts and a clean shirt. A tip for your trainer at the end of your stay is a common thank-you.
The wai
The wai is the Thai greeting: press your palms together at chest height and bow your head a little. The higher the hands and the lower the bow, the more respect it shows. Wai your trainer when you arrive, before pads, and when you leave.
Simple gym rules
- Arrive on time. If you are late, ask before you join in.
- Listen to your trainer, even if you did it another way at home.
- Take off your shoes before you step into the ring.
- Keep your gear clean. Wash your wraps and shorts often.
- Go light with partners. Drills are for learning, not for winning.
What to wear
- Muay Thai shorts (buy a few in Bangkok, they are cheap there).
- A light, quick-dry shirt.
- Hand wraps and your own gloves, if you have them.
- Flip-flops for between the mat and the street.
The Wai Khru
Before a fight, fighters perform the Wai Khru Ram Muay, a dance that honors their teachers. You will see it at every stadium. You do not need to learn it to train, but it is good to know what it means.
Questions
Should I tip my Muay Thai trainer in Thailand?
It is a common thank-you at the end of your stay, but it is not required, and there is no fixed amount. Give what feels right for the work your trainer did with you.
Can I wear shoes in a Muay Thai gym?
Most people train barefoot. Always take your shoes off before you step into the ring.
