Starting Muay Thai after 30 or 40
Updated October 19, 2026
The short answer
It is not too late. Many people start Muay Thai in their 30s, 40s, and later. You train for fitness, skill, and fun, not to fight. The keys are pace and recovery: build up slowly, sleep well, and listen to your body. Talk to your doctor first if you have a health condition.
Why people start later
- It is a full-body workout that never gets boring.
- You learn a real skill, not only reps.
- The gym gives you a group and a reason to show up.
Train smart
- Warm up longer. Give your joints time.
- Leave your ego at the door. Do the moves well before you do them hard.
- Recover on purpose. Sleep, stretch, and take rest days. A massage helps.
- Skip sparring if you want. You can train for years without it.
- Protect your shins. Use shin guards for partner drills.
Why a trip is a great start
Two weeks away from work and home gives you something rare: time to train, rest, and eat well, every day. You come home with a routine and the basics, and you can keep training at a local gym.
This is how our retreat is built: one training session a day, then massage, the onsen, and time to explore. See the plan.
Questions
Am I too old to start Muay Thai at 40?
No. Train at your own pace, focus on technique and recovery, and talk to your doctor first if you have a health condition.
Will I be the oldest person in the gym?
Probably not. Tourist gyms in Thailand see beginners of all ages every day. Our retreat is built for adults over 30.
